For many, a hot cup of coffee, tea, or cocoa is the perfect way to start or end the day. Understanding how hot drinks affect teeth is essential, as these beverages can impact not only your oral health but also your sleep quality and overall well-being. Knowing how acidity, caffeine, and added ingredients influence your body helps you enjoy your favorites without long-term damage.

Coffee Roasts

In general, medium roast coffees are less acidic than their light and dark roast counterparts, which makes them healthier choices for your teeth. The acidity strips the enamel from your teeth, and this enamel is the main protection from cavities and other unwanted stimuli (e.g. sensitivity from thermal events, acidic events, sweets). Additionally, this acidity is hard on the stomach, especially if it is empty, and can cause headaches, allergy-like reactions, and more. Considering how hot drinks affect teeth, choosing a lower acid roast can help preserve enamel strength over time.

Coffee Bean Species

Among the four most commercialized coffee beans:

Arabica (Coffea arabica) – Highest acidity with a smooth flavor.

Robusta (Coffea caniphora) – Lower acidity with nearly twice the caffeine of Arabica.

Excelsa (Coffea excelsa) – Mild acidity and similar caffeine levels to Arabica.

Liberica (Coffea liberica) – Unique flavor and moderate caffeine.

Tip: Look for “low acid” or “pH balanced” on the label.

Caffeine and Sleep

The species of the bean as well as its altitude are the more significant factors that contribute to the caffeine content in the bean. Roast level has some contribution, but its contribution is a more minimal factor, but light roasts generally have more caffeine than their dark roast counterparts, because dark roasts lose moisture during roasting, so they are less dense (so a scoop of dark roast beans has less caffeine than a scoop of light roast beans).

Per 8 oz serving:

Arabica and Excelsa: 80–100 mg

Liberica: 90–120 mg

Robusta: 140–200 mg

Caffeine has an average half-life of 4-6 hours, which means after 8-12 hours, 25% of the caffeine that was ingested is still the body (not metabolized). Decaffeinated coffee still has caffeine in it, generally about a third of the amount, so 3 cups of decaffeinated coffee equals 1 cup of caffeinate coffee. So drinking coffee later in the day, especially if your body is susceptible to the effects of caffeine, is likely to keep you up at night and compromise the quantity and quality of your sleep, causing you to crave caffeine the next morning. Over time, if this cycle is repeated, this can have a variety of systemic and dental health consequences. Caffeine (a diuretic) can lead to dry mouth and increase your cavity risk. Poor sleep increases inflammation and can worsen periodontal (gum) disease. Adults should average 7-9 hours of sleep per night.

Generalized Comparison of Caffeine Content from Non-Coffee Items (8 oz serving)

Black tea: 40–70 mg

Green tea: 20–45 mg

Cola: 24–25 mg

Red Bull: 80 mg

Hot chocolate: 5–15 mg caffeine plus 100–250 mg theobromine

Creamers, Milk, and Sweeteners

Creamers, milk, and coffee/tea sweeteners all contain sugars. These sugars are either natural (e.g. lactose) or added (e.g. sucrose). These sugars cause cavities. Each time a sip of coffee or tea is taken with these flavor enhancers added, specific bacteria in your mouth use these sugars in the coffee to cause cavities.

The more sips taken, the more damage potentially occurs. Less damage occurs when the coffee or tea is drank all in one step, but the enjoyment of drinking the beverage is often reduced.

The best way to prevent cavities from occurring from using these additives in coffee or tea is to
choose choosing sugar-free alternatives of these flavor enhancers.

Hot Chocolate and Dental Health

Hot chocolate can affect your sleep depending on how much you drink, how sensitive you are to stimulants, and what type of cocoa is used.

An average 8 oz cup contains 5-15 mg of caffeine, which can disrupt sleep in sensitive individuals, especially if consumed within 4-6 hours of bedtime.

Hot chocolate generally contains 100-250 mg of theobromine, which is a milder stimulant than caffeine, but has effects that last longer than caffeine, with an average half-life of about 6-10 hours, and can contribute to increased heart rate, wakefulness, and difficulty falling or staying asleep. Theobromine gives us the “feel-good” effects of chocolate, but is toxic to dogs and cats even in small amounts.

The average amount of theobromine in an 8 oz serving of hot chocolate depends on the recipe and type of cocoa used. Natural (non-Dutch cocoa powder) has up to 250 mg of theobromine per 8 oz serving, Dutch-processed cocoa has 100-150 mg, Milk chocolate-based mix has 60-120 mg, and dark chocolate based mix has 200-250 mg.

Many hot chocolate mixes are high in sugar, which can cause a brief spike in energy, followed by a crash, and can potentially disrupt sleep or cause middle-of-the-night wake-ups. Sugar also causes cavities, so it is important to brush and floss after finishing the drink

Hot chocolate can be used to improve your sleep. Choose low-caffeine, low-theobromine, unsweetened cocoa made with warm milk. Use almond or oat milk with calming herbs (e.g. cinnamon, nutmeg), avoid sweeteners, and include magnesium rich cocoa (the magnesium helps relax muscles to improve the quality of sleep). Avoid its use within 6 hours of bedtime, especially dark or rich cocoa types.

The chocolate mix and/or milk will likely contain sugars, unless they are both sugar-free, so immediately after drinking, rinse your mouth with water to help neutralize acids and wash away sugars, chew sugar free gum (preferably with xylitol) to stimulate salivary flow to help neutralize remaining acids and protect enamel, and brush/floss your teeth after waiting at least 30-60 minutes after finishing your drink so the enamel has time to remineralize (strengthen) and is not removed through abrasion from brushing and flossing.

Summary

By understanding how hot drinks affect teeth and making small adjustments to your daily habits, you can continue enjoying your favorite beverages without compromising your oral health. Choosing low-acid options, limiting added sugars, and timing your caffeine intake wisely can help protect both your teeth and your sleep.
Oral hygiene is a lifelong commitment, evolving with us from the early days of baby teeth to the golden years. As we navigate through different stages of life, our dental care needs change, and understanding these shifts is crucial for maintaining optimal oral health. Let's explore the differences between brushing your teeth as an infant, toddler, child, adult, and in old age.

Cleaning the Oral Cavity of an Infant

Frequency and Technique:

As an infant (from birth to about one year old), the goal is to keep the gums clean on a regular basis (some infants are born with teeth). This can be accomplished by simply using a clean, damp cloth and gently rubbing the gums, and teeth if present, to remove any and all debris on them. Generally, this should be done once a day.

Brushing For Toddlers

Frequency and Technique:

Brushing the teeth of toddlers (ages one through three years old) should be accomplished by using a very small, soft toothbrush and a pea-sized portion of toothpaste without fluoride (in case the child swallows the toothpaste).

Once the child understands not to swallow the toothpaste and spits it out once they are done brushing, fluoride toothpaste can be introduced. Brushing should take approximately two minutes. Flossing is needed in areas where the teeth begin making contact. Hand-held dental flossers for kids are great for this task. The parent(s) must be the one to deliver this care until the child demonstrates the ability to do this competently on their own (generally between the ages of six and nine), but will still have to be supervised for quite some time after this.

Brushing should take place after feeding, in the morning and evening. Avoid having the child sip juice and/or milk before taking a nap or at bedtime as this can cause dental cavities on their teeth. Generally, anything sweet to the taste can cause dental cavities and the teeth should be brushed after these are ingested.

Brushing For Children: Building Habits For A Lifetime

Frequency and Technique:

In our youth, the focus is on establishing good oral hygiene habits. Children often start with smaller, soft brushes and require supervision to ensure they're brushing for the recommended two minutes with a small ribbon of fluoride toothpaste. Emphasizing technique and making brushing a fun routine can set the foundation for a lifetime of healthy dental practices.

Flossing between all teeth contacts is equally important. The child should be transitioning to adult-type dental floss during this time with the help of the parent(s) and should be supervised for some time after this to ensure this technique is done properly and becomes a healthy part of their daily oral care.

Brushing and flossing should be done twice a day; in the morning after eating breakfast and in the evening after eating dinner. Watch the intake of fruit and sugary snacks (refined carbohydrates) as this can cause dental cavities.

Learning Through Play:

Younger individuals are often more receptive to educational tools like toothbrushes with favorite characters or apps that make brushing an interactive experience. The goal is to make dental care enjoyable while instilling the importance of maintaining healthy teeth.

Brushing For Adults

Frequency and Technique:

As an adult, most should be brushing twice daily. Once in the morning after breakfast and once after dinner. Brushing should be accomplished for two minutes each time by using a small ribbon of fluoride toothpaste (to make the teeth less susceptible to tooth decay) and a soft toothbrush (to protect the gums). Brushing the top of the tongue can also play a role in reducing bad breath. Flossing between all tooth contacts is equally as important as up to 30-40% of the total tooth surfaces in your mouth are located between the teeth where a toothbrush cannot reach.

Some people can be more susceptible to getting cavities (genetically and/or environmentally, and possibly epigenetically), and prescription fluoride may be recommended. Some people get sensitivity on their teeth near the gums which can sometimes be treated with over-the-counter sensitive toothpaste and sometimes using prescription toothpaste and/or prescription chemical adjuncts.

No matter how good your technique is, problems will likely still arise (gum disease, cavities, etc.) and having regular dental check-ups is strongly encouraged to try to catch the problem while it is small and more easily treatable.

Brushing in Old Age: Navigating Changing Needs

Gentle Care:

As we age, our teeth and gums may become more sensitive. Using a soft or extra-soft bristled toothbrush becomes crucial to prevent damage. The focus shifts to gentle care, ensuring that the toothbrushing process remains effective without causing discomfort.

Older adults often lose bone around their teeth due to periodontal disease (gum problems around the teeth). This causes the spaces between the teeth at the gumline to become larger. This makes it more difficult to keep clean and can cause cavities to develop in this area as well as increased bone loss if not thoroughly cleaned daily. Various home care aids can be used to help control this problem, such as a waterpik and proxabrushes.

Our salivary production can decrease (e.g. through medications, cancer treatments, etc.), which makes use more susceptible to cavities at the gumline of the teeth (called root caries) and/or periodontal disease. Over-the-counter products (e.g. Biotene) and prescription fluoride or chemical adjuncts can be very helpful in controlling this problem as well as more frequent visits to the dentist for check-ups.

Adapting to Changes:

Older individuals may face challenges such as arthritis or diminished dexterity, making it essential to choose adaptive tools like electric toothbrushes or brushes with larger grips. These modifications help maintain independence in oral care. And others may develop diminished cognitive abilities/diseases, which may require the need of a caregiver.

Oral Hygiene as a Gateway to Overall Well-being:

In old age, oral hygiene is not just about teeth; it's a gateway to overall well-being. Conditions like dry mouth or medications can impact oral hygiene, requiring a tailored approach. Regular dental check-ups become even more critical to address issues promptly. Become proactive and learn more about preventative dentistry techniques.

Your Childs oral health is as important now as it will be as an adult and in some ways even more so. The habits they learn today they'll carry with them as they get older, and the health of their teeth and gums now will have a lasting effect on their oral health when they become adults. But its one thing to know that your child should care for their dental health. Its quite another to teach them to care for it successfully and on their own. For that, you may need to make brushing seem and feel more fun, something they can use to enjoy brushing, and to make sure they brush successfully. How to Make Brushing Fun. Luckily, there are many ways that you can make brushing teeth way more fun for both your child and you. With a little imagination, and the following tips, you can make brushing a far more enjoyable experience for the both of you.

Let Them Choose a Fun Toothbrush There are a lot of fun and interesting toothbrushes for children available online and offline, including spider man toothbrushes, Barbie, and many others. Let them choose the toothbrush, so they feel its really theirs and love grabbing it each day.

Do a Toothbrush Song or Dance Toothbrush songs and toothbrush dances can help your child both enjoy brushing time and learn to brush their teeth for longer. You can make up your own brushing song and dance together to make it even more special.

Brush with Them Young kids love doing things with their parents, and that includes tooth brushing. Even though you may not go to bed the same time as your child, brushing with them can still make the experience much more enjoyable.

Have a Reward Sheet Another great strategy is to let your child earn stars every time they give themselves a great brush. They can put a star sticker on their sheet, and if they complete the sheet they can have a toy, a dessert, or something else that they love.

Tasty Toothpastes Its also a good idea to make sure that you use a tasty toothpaste that your child enjoys. There are many toothpastes designed specifically for kids that offer great flavors your child will love, increasing their enjoyment of brushing every day.

Its also okay to be creative. If you have a fun idea that you think will help your child love brushing their teeth, give it a try. The more your child enjoys brushing (and flossing!), the more successful they'll be. And if you want help making sure your Childs teeth look their very best, make sure you contact the office of Dr. Andrew Ross in Visalia today at 559-732-3972.

Chipping a tooth is an unexpected challenge. Often it is also a dental emergency. If you chipped a tooth and are in pain, contact Dr. Ross’s office today at (559) 732-3972.

There are many situations that may potentially cause a chipped tooth:

Trauma –Such as bumping your tooth on a hard surface.

Chewing –Such as biting into an olivepit or hard candy.

Tooth Decay –Severe tooth decay can cause teeth to chip

There are also several issues that may increase the risk for chipped teeth, such as alcoholism, nighttime tooth grinding (bruxism), and acid reflux.

If you have a chipped tooth, it’s important to take action. Some chipped teeth are more serious than others, but all broken teeth benefit from some type of treatment

Next Steps: With Pain

If your chipped tooth is causing you pain, it is important to see a dentist right away. Pain may indicate that the chipped tooth has touched the root. In that case, the sooner the intervention, the more successful the outcome. You can call us for an emergency appointment, and we can let you know how fast we can get you in. In some cases, you may need a root canal to stop the pain.

If there is no pain, it’s still a good idea to see a dentist as soon as possible. Until we review it closely, it’s possible that there is a risk of further cracking if you eat any hard foods. But it also may be a cosmetic issue. There are many treatments that are available for both cosmetic and functional intervention:

Dental Fillings–Some chipped teeth only need a dental filling to seal up the tooth and prevent further damage. If possible, this is the option we will explore first.

Dental Bonding–Bonding is used when the damage to the tooth is visible. Dr. Rossapplies a resin to the missing area and hardens it so that the chip is not visible to the naked eye.

Dental Crown–For larger chips, you may be a candidate for a crown. We’ll cover the tooth with a tooth-like structure that restores its appearance.

n some cases, you may want to consider Porcelain veneers. Veneers cover the teeth to give them a permanently bright and white appearance. They are one of the most popular types of cosmetic dentistry, and great for those that were already considering a smile makeover.

Dr. Andrew Ross’ philosophy is to stop dental problems before they even start. We focus on teaching patients preventative measures to practice at home, like when and how to brush and floss; which products are best; and how to identify abnormalities in teeth and gums.

Are you unhappy with your current dental care provider? Are
you new to the Visalia, CA area? Finding the right dentist can be a daunting
task, but it’s vital to your health! Routine examinations are important in
helping you maintain a healthy, beautiful smile. By asking the right questions,
you can find the Visalia dentist that can best serve you.

If you are looking for a high-quality, family-oriented
dentist, put Ross Family and Cosmetic at the top of your list. Dr. Andrew Ross provides
preventative, general, and cosmetic services to patients of all ages, and our
office feels professional, yet comfortable. To learn more about our practice
and services, contact us today at (559) 697-6406.

When looking for a dentist, ask your friends and neighbors
for suggestions. Don’t be afraid to visit the dentist offices and ask these
five important questions:

Is the dentist office’s location practical?

Driving an hour to the dentist isn’t realistic, especially
in an emergency. Make sure the dentist you choose is close to your home or
work. Take a look at the office hours. Do they fit your busy schedule? You are
much more likely to attend dental appointments if your dentist’s office is
conveniently located. Remember, you can’t get the dental care you need if you
don’t show up!

What payment or financing options are offered?

Of course, if you have dental insurance, make sure the
dentist is in your network or will file out of network claims for you. If the
dentist’s website isn’t clear, check
out the FAQs page or call the office to ask about insurance, payment
options, and financing. If you’re met with an unfriendly response, move on down
your list. CareCredit® low and no-interest payment plans are great because they
make even big dental work affordable.

What services does the dentist offer?

For a one-stop-shop dentist, look for someone who offers preventative, general, and cosmetic dentistry.
This will ensure that you don’t have to search for another dentist later! If
you have children,
or are planning to, family dental care should be a priority. This way, you can
schedule appointments for you and your kids at the same time. Emergency dental
care is another service you’ll want to ask about. If a serious situation
arises, you’ll find peace in knowing exactly where to turn.

What education does the dentist have?

Most dentists will have their diploma and other
certifications on display at their office. Take the time to visit with the
dentist and get to know him or her. Ask questions about training and
experience, such as:

“How long have you been practicing dentistry?”

“Do you specialize in anything?”

“Where is your degree from?”

“What are you doing to continue your education?”

“Are you associated with any professional dental
organizations?”

You’ve heard it before. Brush your teeth twice a day and floss daily for a healthier smile. But what else can you do on a daily basis to improve your oral care habits? We suggest these five tips.

1. Brush Properly

It’s not enough to just brush your teeth. You have to do it correctly. If you’re not, it’s almost as bad as not brushing at all. So in addition to brushing for two minutes, you should move your toothbrush in gentle, circular motions — emphasis on the gentle. Brushing too hard can wear down enamel and lead to receding gums and tooth sensitivity.

Also use your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle, making sure to get the gumline, outer surfaces, inner surfaces, and tongue.

2. Consider mouthwash

If you’re brushing and flossing, you might be hesitant to add another step, but here’s why you should reconsider skipping mouthwash. Mouthwash will reduce the amount of acid in your mouth and cleans hard to brush areas in and around the gums. Ask your dentist for recommendations to find the right one for you.

3. Think about what you consume

What you eat and drink each day affects your oral health. So our first suggestion is to drink plenty of water. Particularly, if you drink water after every meal, it can help wash away some of the effects of acidic food and beverages between brushes. Of course, limiting acidic and sugary foods is our next suggestion. Too much of these types of foods will wear down enamel, leading to cavities. So, it’s important to be mindful.

4. Choose products carefully

First of all, get a quality toothbrush. Particularly, electric toothbrushes have been shown to remove more plaque and achieve healthier gums than standard manual toothbrushes. If you’re hesitant to shell out money for an electric toothbrush, then you should look for a manual toothbrush with soft bristles.

While you’re at it, make sure you’re looking at more than flavor or whitening power when buying toothpaste. Whatever you choose needs to contain fluoride. It’s the leading defense against tooth decay.

5. Find the best local dentist

You should visit your dentist twice a year. That means it’s essential to find the right local dentist. You want someone who is easy to talk to, trustworthy, and passionate about providing you the best care.

If you’re in the Visalia area, consider Ross Family & Cosmetic Dentistry. Dr. Andrew Ross specializes in comprehensive family care and cosmetic dentistry. He’s committed to precisely diagnosing and best treating his patient’s dental problems. Schedule an appointment today to be on your way to a healthier more beautiful smile.

Gingivitis is an infection of the teeth and gums and is caused by neglect. By not brushing and flossing regularly, you allow plaque and tartar to build up, eventually causing some of the signs and symptoms we will talk about throughout this post. If allowed to fester long enough, gingivitis can even get beneath the gums and infect the jawbone.

Here are the signs to look for if you are afraid that either you or your child has gingivitis.

Chronic Bad Breath

Needless to say, the idea of bacteria growing and harvesting inside your mouth does not paint a pretty picture. Well, it doesnâ€t smell good either. And if you do in fact have gingivitis, the problem of bad breath has likely advanced to a stage where it will not be remedied simply by brushing and gargling.

Pain in Your Gums

Gingivitis causes gums to become swollen, puffy, and tender. None of this feels good. You may even find that they bleed, particularly when you brush. Unfortunately, the pain will make you want to brush your teeth even less, and, as that is precisely what brought about gingivitis in the first place, this becomes a vicious cycle.

Receding Gums

As the bacteria in your mouth is quite literally eating away at your gums, they will begin to recede after a while. So if you notice your teeth looking larger, you may have gingivitis. Another visual element of infected gums is that they may appear a darker shade of red than usual.

Pus

In extreme cases, you will see pockets appear between your gums and your teeth. These pockets are formulated by the pus that they contain.

Other symptoms to watch out for are teeth that feel sensitive and that are turning yellow and brown. While these are not exactly indicative of gingivitis, they do hint that you are not taking good enough care of your teeth, and that a serious infection may be on the horizon.

If all of this sounds unpleasant, thatâ€s because it absolutely is. Gingivitis is painful and, if left unchecked, it will affect not only your oral health but your overall health as well. Its symptoms are also of a nature that tend to make people very self conscious and therefore can even have a detrimental effect on their social lives. All of this is very good reason to brush and floss at least twice a day. And if you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed above, call your dentist right away!

A dental bridge is a permanent replacement for a tooth that is missing. It's attached to the teeth on either side of the gap. This procedure can be expensive, up to $1,200, and patients worry that it won't be worth it in the long term. With proper care, you can expect your dental bridge to last ten years--and maybe even a lifetime.

What Dental Bridges Do

Dental bridges serve an important purpose. They don't just make your smile look as good as new; they help preserve the teeth you still have! When you're missing a tooth, the teeth around it shift position over time. They can fall out of alignment with your teeth above. As a result, it makes it more likely for them to get cavities and can throw off your bite. An improperly aligned bite can be painful and even wear down your teeth prematurely. It's clear that a dental bridge is critical to the health of your mouth in the long run.

The Average Lifespan is up to 10 Years

The average lifespan of a dental bridge is up to ten years. Some dental bridges break down sooner, but with careful hygiene, most can last a lot longer. In general, you can count on ten years if you take steps to preserve it. For this reason, proper oral hygiene makes the cost much more affordable. Even if you do have to get it repaired or replaced, it won't be for a long time.

What Kills Dental Bridges

Two common issues permanently damage your dental bridges. The first issue has to do with the foods you eat. Certain foods are responsible for causing the dental bridge to break. Dental bridges handle average chewing well, but biting exceptionally hard foods like hard candies can damage them. The same is true of sticky foods and foods that place undue pressure on the bridge. If you have a dental bridge, you'll want to avoid chewy toffees and caramels, as well as hard nuts and popcorn.

The other way that dental bridges die an early death is through the decay of the teeth around them. The healthy teeth that surround your bridges help anchor them in your mouth. These teeth have to be drilled down to fit the bridge attachments. As a result, they sometimes grow weaker and become more prone to decay. If you don't take the time to brush and floss your teeth after every meal correctly, they could develop large cavities and even require root canals. These will interfere with your bridge and drastically shorten its lifespan.

Professional Care Makes a Difference

Even if you brush and floss every day, cleaning your dental bridge adequately enough to keep it in top shape, will still be difficult. The bridge itself makes it difficult for your brush to reach the gum line. Flossing under your bridge with a floss threader is a must, but even that can't get out all of the trapped food particles out from under your bridge. Professional cleaning every six months is the only way to be sure you've gotten rid of that trapped food. If you don't, it's in a prime spot to rot your teeth--even if you're brushing and flossing three or four times a day.

A dental bridge lasts an average of ten years, but it could last even longer with the right care. Be cautious with what you eat. Take your oral hygiene very seriously, and stick to your regularly scheduled cleanings. Your teeth will thank you.
