Braces can be used to correct problems related to function, esthetics, phonetics, airway, jaw joints, and more. Braces are generally the first option for correcting teeth that are poorly positioned. If your teeth have an overbite, or are crowed, overlapped, gapped, etc., then orthodontic treatment may be a good option for you.
Conventional orthodontics utilizes brackets and metal wires to move teeth. Alternatively, clear aligners (e.g. Invisalign, SureSmile) may be used to do many of the same movements that conventional braces are used to make with the same high-quality results.
Clear aligners work by using a series of trays that are worn every day (23 hours a day) and are changed with a new pair every 2 weeks until the teeth are in their desired position. Compared to conventional braces, clear aligners offer the advantage of being significantly less noticeable, more hygienic (easier to keep the teeth and gums clean while brushing and flossing, thus reducing chances of gum disease and dental cavities), and will not cause irritation in the mouth from brackets or wires abrading and poking the inside of the mouth.
