Solea is an isotopic CO 2 dental laser system cleared by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for hard and soft-tissue procedures. It was developed in Boston, Massachusetts by Convergent Dental, based on research conducted at the University of California School of Dentistry. This system produces a laser with a unique wavelength, 9.3 microns, that is guided by sophisticated computers to deliver dental procedures for both the teeth and gums, from simple cavities to complex surgeries.

This laser can replace the dental drill in a number of procedures, and causes virtually no pain, vibration, or drilling noise. The use of local anesthetics is generally not required, which shortens the procedure time, allows for more procedures to be done in a given visit, provides for less anxiety and discomfort, and allows the patient to leave the appointment without feeling numb. Additionally, simple soft-tissue procedures occur with virtually no bleeding, and often suture-free, and the healing time is shortened following a procedure because this laser is far less invasive than a traditional handpiece.

There are actually fewer risks in using a dental laser like Solea in comparison to traditional dental treatments. There is less potential chance of bacterial infection because laser treatments are so precise, and there is often far less bleeding during complex surgical procedures.

Some common dental applications of Solea include cavity preparation for fillings, ceramic crown removal, gingivectomies, frenectomies, canker sore treatments (best within 1-2 days after the onset), and rapid snore reduction (Solea Sleep).

In addition to adults, Solea can be used on children and infants. Frenectomy treatments, which can be invasive and often require general anesthesia for children and infants, can be done quickly, comfortably, and without anesthesia thanks to Solea.
