Through the advent of the digital technology and through computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM), crowns can be fabricated and delivered in one appointment, as opposed to taking multiple appointments using conventional means. This new technology uses a scanner (3D imaging camera) to take an ”impression” and eliminates the need of taking an impression using tradition goopy materials placed into the mouth using a tray. The crown is prepared, designed, manufactured, and delivered in one visit, which eliminates the need of having to place a temporary crown (provisional restoration) and coming back a second visit to have it delivered.
These same-day crowns are made of high-grade ceramics (metal free) which are as strong and as esthetic as crowns made by an outside laboratory. Being completed in one visit is beneficial as it saves your time and eliminates the use of provisional restorations, which can cause sensitivity and discomfort or even come off (causing other problems).
This same technology can also be used to make same-day inlays, onlays, and partial crowns.
